Our vision for Race Around the Rock

The Salt Spring Island Rowing Club has a vision to inspire interest and passion for coastal rowing and establish our region as a key contributor to the growth of the sport.

We aim to foster a growing network of lasting connections within the rowing community, and contribute positively to the healthy enjoyment and love for coastal ecosystems.

Some comments on the race from participants....

“I am a Masters rower that was looking for a new challenge ... Race Around the Rock fit the bill!

My rowing partner, Helen, and I were in the RAR in the first year and we surprised ourselves that we could row the first leg for a distance of 15KM - the farthest we have ever rowed.

Knowing the score, the second year we did 25 KM.

We love the relaxed vibe, the scenery, the camaraderie and the challenge - we'll be back next year!”

From OARCA:

The “Pod of OARCAs” crew.

The Race Around the Rock was a great event. Sunshine and almost no wind made for spectacular conditions. The crew in the photo above had an average age of 69 proving that age is no limit to getting out and enjoying coastal rowing. In one of the other crews, there was a double with an average age of 15 again proving that age is not a barrier even at the other end of the scale.

Everyone is excited about next year’s race. Here’s hoping that even more people join in.

From West Coast Rowing Adventures:

“I participated in the 1st and 2nd editions of the Race Around the Rock, and it has been an incredible experience. The event perfectly combines adventure and endurance, making it a unique challenge in the growing discipline of coastal rowing. The community spirit among participants, volunteers and organizers creates a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Being in the Gulf Islands adds to the charm of this unique race, making it an ideal location for such an event. Highly recommend for rowing enthusiasts seeking an adventure on the West Coast of Canada”
