Hello and Happy Canada Day 2024!

The regatta is a coastal only event. There will be Beach Sprint time trials Saturday morning August 17th, 2024. Then there will be 2500-meter coastal endurance rowing in the afternoon, followed by our popular hospitality event featuring P.E.I. mussels and potatoes. 

Sunday August 18th begins with the beach sprint finals. There is no progression or semi-finals because of time limitations, so we will go directly to finals in all events.

Sunday morning will conclude with a fun team relay event for any competitors who didn’t make a final. We will mix up the teams for some added excitement and everyone will get a chance to race on Sunday!  Our goal is to wrap up shortly after noon so that our Nova Scotia visitors can catch the afternoon ferry back to the mainland. 

We are returning to our original location this year, on the sandy beach of Brudenell Island. The endurance races will be rowing out and returning between the Beach Sprint Buoys. There is lots of room for spectators to watch the races from the bank in front of the Multipurpose Centre so bring along your family and friends. 

All boats and oars will be provided, so competitors only need to bring their spirit of adventure…and water shoes!! 

Registration is now open on Regatta Central. 

Entries and fees are due on August 3, 2024 to allow us time to put together the draw.

Welcome to the Red Island Regatta hosted by Rowing PEI.  The regatta is a coastal only event. There will be beach sprint time trials Saturday morning August 17th, 2024, followed by a full program of 2500-meter coastal endurance rowing in the afternoon, with solo, doubles and the quad racing in each flight. Awards in the coastal events will be handed out on Saturday after the competition. 

The beach sprint finals will be held on Sunday August 18th.  There will be no progression or semi-finals because of time limitations. Awards will be handed out on the beach at the end of racing.

Rowers will compete on buoyed courses located on the Brudenell River, in front of the Brudenell Multipurpose Centre and next to the Brudenell River Campground.

We are returning to our original location this year, on the sandy beach of Brudenell Island. The endurance races will be rowing out and returning between the Beach Sprint Buoys. There is lots of room for spectators to watch the races from the bank in front of the Multipurpose Centre so be sure to bring along your family and friends. 

The Multipurpose Centre will be our “home base” for the weekend, including the Awards and Hospitality Event after the races on Saturday. Washrooms and key volunteer support staff for the organizing committee will also be found at this location. 

All boats and oars will be provided, so competitors only need to bring their spirit of adventure…and water shoes!! 

For the coastal competition on Saturday afternoon, rowers will start in the water, jumping into their boats before rowing down the beach sprint course and following a buoyed course that will be visible to spectators on the shore. The finish will be racing down the beach sprint buoyed course and finishing at the sand spit, giving fans another great view. 

The beach sprint events on Saturday and Sunday mornings and the team relay competition will provide everyone with a taste of this exciting, rapidly-growing form of rowing, which is catching fire around the world and will be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The awards on Saturday will be handed out at the Multipurpose Centre at the end of racing There will be the traditional Red Island Regatta hospitality event, featuring a feast of Island baked potatoes and mussels. The awards for the beach sprints on Sunday morning will be presented on the beach at the end of racing.  Everyone is eager to win those bags of world famous P.E.I. potatoes!!!  

All rowers will be required to wear water shoes / footwear to prevent foot injuries and cuts from the natural beach setting. This is mandatory. 

First Aid will be provided by our good friends at the PEI GSAR (Ground Search and Rescue). 

We welcome you all to have some fun in this amazing and beautiful setting, showcasing Prince Edward Island and coastal rowing.

2024 Red Island Regatta Coastal Events 

*This is a proposed schedule only for the start of each day and may change depending on the number of entries. Sunday will not require a weigh-in.

For all racing, the races are listed as open and final so that rowers can race all together. Awards will be presented for the different categories of Under 19 and Senior. 

(1) Under 19 — A rower or coxswain may compete as an Under 19 competitor until the 31st of December of the year in which they reach the age of 18. 

(2) Senior — A rower or coxswain of any age may compete as a Senior.

*Captain = one person per boat, so if you are rowing a single, you must attend. In a double or quad, at least one person should be designated as captain.

Sunday August 18th 2024 - Beach Sprint Finals and Team Relay

 

CAPTAINS MEETING: 7:00 A.M. meet on the beach for any last minute instructions for the beach sprint finals ONLY.  

 All boats will be at the water’s edge by 7:00 A.M.

One crew member in every boat must attend the Captains Meeting. 

Crews not in attendance will be issued a yellow card.

*Everyone in the Team Relay should attend the Special Meeting at 10:15 AM as this is a new format!  

The Relay will have teams of 6-8 participants racing side by side in coastal doubles.

Priority for the teams will be given to anyone who is NOT racing in a beach sprint final on Sunday. Coaches and the Organizing Committee will create teams that are fair and contain a mix of genders and age.  Competitors who are competing on Sunday may be added to fill out a team roster. 

This is meant to be fun, as well as competitive. You will be passing a POTATO! 

Team Members who are not racing will be boat handlers.

One person from each double has to start and return to the start line and hand off the potato to the next person on their team. 

Time penalties will be applied for any missed buoys and for rowing past the stop flags.

IMPORTANT DATES: 

July 1, 2024 – Entries open on Regatta Central 

August 3, 2024 – Entries close at midnight to allow organizers time to organize flights and source additional boats if needed. All payments must be received online or by cheque by Monday August 3rd, 2024.

August 8, 2024 – Deadline for scratches without penalty. They must be received by midnight. Scratches received on or after August 9, 2024 will forfeit entry fees. 

August 11, 2024 – The draw is released. 

August 12, 2024 – At midnight – deadline to receive changes from coaches and competitors. 

• Bulletins will be issued by email and posted online every time the draw is revised.
• We will create a WhatsApp group for communicating any important changes during the event.
• We will be using CrewTimer for the draw and results. Paper copies of the draw and results will also be available if needed but we encourage you to have CrewTimer on your phones. 

Note: Coastal Rower Registration 

There are a limited number of coastal boats/seats; please register early and efforts will be made to accommodate all requests especially for the quad. (C4x+)

Coastal events will be Coastal 1x, Coastal 2x, Coastal 4x+ for U19 and Senior. All races will be considered open and finals. Prizes will be awarded based on times. 

For Coastal 4x+, crews can provide their own coxswain or a RPEI cox will be arranged.

Important Notes: 

The racing distance may be changed by the Chief Umpire in the case of adverse weather conditions, in consultation with the Organizing Committee. 

If cancellation of this regatta is unavoidable due to inclement weather or for any reason beyond the control of the organizing committee, no refunds will be offered.

RULES AND REGULATIONS 

APPLICABILITY OF RULES 

1. Unless otherwise noted in this package, the RCA Rules of Racing approved in January 2022 will be followed. 

REGISTRATION 

2. Regatta registration must be completed online through Regatta Central. Each club is responsible for registering their own athletes. All athletes must be in the RCA membership system. No other form of registration will be accepted. 
3. The registration must be completed by the deadline as stated in Regatta Central. 
4. If you are unable to complete registration or have technical difficulties contact [email protected].
5. RCA membership numbers of all participants are required. Registration will be verified through RCA and participants who are not registered with RCA will NOT be allowed to participate. US Rowing participants must include their registration number on the entry form as well. 
6. Entries will open July 1, 2024  and close August 3, 2024 at midnight, to allow organizers time to organize flights and source additional boats if needed. 
7. Scratches without penalty must be received by midnight August 8,2024, one week before the event. Scratches received after August 9, 2024 will forfeit entry fees. 
8. Scratches after racing has begun will be listed a DNS (did not start) and will forfeit entry fees without suitable medical attestation. 
9. All substitutes must be listed on the athlete list. Clubs can edit the crew lineups at any point in time up to 1 hour before the start of the race. This allows time to validate the athletes in the RCA database.

11. One crew member in every boat must attend the Captains Race and Safety Meeting. Crews not in attendance will be issued a yellow card. This meeting will review the major rules of the regatta for the Coastal events.
12. A race will not be delayed accommodating a late arriving crew. 
13. The number of club entries in each event may be restricted and dependent on the registrations and the available spaces / seats.
14. The number of races per athlete will depend on the number of entries and the available seats to be raced. This will be determined by the coaches and the organizing committee.
15. There will be a weigh-in for the coxswain for the C4x+  only. The weigh-in will take place at the Multipurpose Centre between 7:30 A.M. and 7:45 A.M., prior to the Captains Meeting on Saturday August 17, 2024.
16. Each coxswain MUST carry their own “dead weight” required and have it validated at the weigh-in. The coxswain must show it at the Control Commission again when returning from racing.
17. Please be advised that the race schedule is subject to change depending on the number of entries per event. 
18. You must wear protective footwear for the coastal races. Rowers without footwear will not be allowed to compete.
19. Coastal endurance races- junior rowers must wear a full PFD. (provided) Adult rowers in singles and doubles will wear belt PFDs. 
20. There will be PFDs in the coastal quad and the coxswain will wear a full PFD.
21. Beach sprint PFDs will be in the boats. *applies for juniors as well so they can run 
22. Boat Handlers - Crews are asked to provide their own boat handlers for the endurance races and the beach sprints. There will be Rowing PEI volunteers on hand to assist if need be.
23. There will be flag and/or buoys marking the location where the boats MUST, to prevent damage to the oars and the keel of the boats. A time penalty of one (1) minute will be given to any crew that doesn’t stop at the flags because this is a safety concern. 

Boat handlers should not be expected to catch fast moving boats. That puts them at risk. It’s up to the crews to stop at the flags. 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

The racing distance may be changed by the Chief Umpire in the case of adverse weather conditions. This decision will be made in consultation with the Organizing Committee.

For the beach sprints, the time trial on the Saturday may be used for the progression system. In the case of inclement weather, the progression system may be changed, to move quickly to the finals, or to declare the winners. 

If cancellation of this regatta is unavoidable due to inclement weather or for any reason beyond the control of the organizing committee no refunds will be offered.

CLUB & COMPETITION ELIGIBILITY

24. Clubs qualified to participate at the regatta must be in good standing with RCA.
25. International crews (US and abroad) must provide suitable documentation that their club is registered and in good standing with their National Governing Body.
26. All members at the regatta must be represented in consistent club colors. Although it is understood that a variety of rowing uniforms are available such as singlets, uni-suits, etc., officials of the regatta must see a clear consistency in the color and pattern worn by all members, male and female, representing one club.
27. Competitors must be registered with their National Sport Governing Body and provide suitable documentation with registration (Canadian athletes must submit RCA numbers with registration and US athletes should submit US Rowing numbers).
28. Competitors participating in multiple events are responsible for allowing sufficient time between events.
29. A competitor may compete for his/her club or province or university / college.
30. Competitors may participate as a member of a composite crew (two or more clubs).
31. The Red Island Regatta recognizes two categories of rowers: under 19 and Senior for these coastal events. 

Categories of Rowers and Proof of Age and Identity. On request, every competitor must be able to provide proof of age and identity by producing government issued documentation with photo, or other acceptable form of identification as stipulated by the OC and stated in the Regatta Package or Bulletin. RCA recognizes the following categories of competitors: (1) Under 19 — A rower or coxswain may compete as an Under 19 competitor until the 31st of December of the year in which they reach the age of 18, (2) Senior — A rower or coxswain of any age may compete as a Senior.

32. Rowing PEI seeks to create a rewarding and fun competitive experience. Events may be combined to provide athletes with racing opportunities. The categories of rowers and classes of boats will be:

Men-C1X, C2X: U19 & Senior 

Women-C1X, C2X: U19 & Senior 

Mixed- C2X: U19 & Senior 

Mixed – C4X+: U19 & Senior 

 

Other Equipment 

If a participant would like to bring their own boat or other equipment to the regatta, they need to  send an email to the Organizing Committee. 

The boats need to be approved by World Rowing and competitors must provide the brand, equipment number and weight.  

That will allow organizers to add weight if necessary to make the event fair. 

The registration fees will be reduced by $10 per event for any competitors who provide their own equipment. 

Rowing PEI is not responsible for any damage to personal equipment used during the Red Island Regatta. 

 

 

ROWING COURSES  

 

Coastal Endurance Course – 2.5 km  

 

Warm up and Cool down Areas are located on land due to the turnaround use of the equipment.

The cool-down area will be in the grassy area next to the beach near the campground area. 

Important note on the finish: The coastal endurance races finish down the centre of the beach sprint course and between the green buoys. 

 

Coastal Rowing

32. For coastal races, competitors will start next to their boats in the water.
33. Competitors must wear protective footwear, or they will not be allowed to participate. This will be strictly enforced after some rowers cut their feet on shells in previous years. We suggest waterproof shoes or narrow running shoes that you don’t mind getting wet! 
34. In coastal endurance races, rowers in singles and doubles will wear belt PFDs. There will be PFDs in the coastal quad and the cox will wear a full PFD. *it’s hard to climb in the quad, which is why we are putting the PFDs in the boat versus wearing them.
35. Rowers under the age of 16 will wear full PFDs for coastal endurance events. The full PFD will be in the boat for the beach sprints. 

 

 

36. Adult competitors (over the age of 18) in the beach sprints will not be required to wear a PFD. A full PFD will be in the boat. 
37. The coastal course is not triangular in shape. See map for layout.
38. Rules for the coastal course will follow the rules of coastal racing in the RCA Rules of Racing approved in January 2022.

Control Commission:

39. Control commission will be a tent set up on the Brudenell Island beach.
40. Each crew will need to designate a team captain who will need to report to the Control Commission before and after each race.
41. Crews are to report to control BEFORE and AFTER every race. 

BEFORE – Competitors need to get registered, and any updated information from the Control Commission. AFTER – Competitors also must come back to the Control Commission to check in after their race. 

Start Procedure 

42. The start will be done on the water between 2 starting buoys near the shore line.This Start line will also be the Finish line. Competitors will stand in the water beside their boats.

The start will be given by visual and audible signals as follow:

– 3 min : Hoist 3 red balls with a white cross and sound 3 clear, short horn blast.

– 2 min : Lower 1 of the 3 red balls and sound 2 clear, short horn blast.

– 1 min : Lower 1 of the 2 red balls and sound 1 clear, short horn blast.

– Start : Lower the last red balls and sound 1 long blast with the horn.

Coastal Rules of Racing

43. COLLISIONS –  In case of collisions (of boats or oars), and if one of the crews objects, the Umpire shall decide who is at fault and may impose a penalty on the boat responsible for the collision. In the event of a severe collision, the Umpire may decide fault and may impose a one (1) minute penalty on the crew responsible.

44. OVERTAKING – It is the responsibility of a crew overtaking another crew to avoid interfering with the crew being overtaken; a crew which is being overtaken must maintain its course and shall not interfere with the overtaking crew. If a crew being overtaken obstructs or interferes with the overtaking crew by changing its course or in any other manner, the Race Umpire may penalize the crew causing obstruction or interference or hindrance by awarding a time penalty of 60 seconds or may exclude the crew or take other appropriate measures under the rules.

45. ROUNDING OF A TURNING MARK –  At the turning marks, it is the individual responsibility of every crew member to avoid severe collisions with other crews and observe the rules of overtaking. Crews are responsible for their own steering. In order to be placed in the final ranking for the event, all crews must round all turning marks in the correct direction and must complete the full course as designated by the Organizing Committee.

46. OBJECTIONS  – Will be heard at the Control Commission immediately upon return from flight up until the start of the next flight.

Beach SprintsTime Trials 

47. Racing will be match racing (2 boats at a time). One rower per crew will start on the beach. In the case of a double, one will be on the beach, the other will be in the water with the boat and oars. 
48. The race starts with a short run to the boat. Then the crew steers through a 250 m slalom course and returns to the beach (total rowing 500 m).
49. In case of adverse weather, the time trial result may be used for another step of the progression system.  The progression system may be changed and the time trial will be important. 
50. Boat holders will be used for the Beach Sprints and provided by the respective crews. There will be support from Rowing PEI volunteers. 
51. Please don’t row the boats too close into shore. Pay attention to the instructions from race officials as to where to get out of the shells and run to shore. The line will be marked with flags.  We have had damage to oars and fins in previous events so please be respectful of our equipment. There will be a time penalty of 1 (one) minute given to crews who go past the stop flags. 
52. When they arrive back at the beach, one of the rowers from each crew runs to the finish line.

Brudenell Beach Sprint Course

 

Food and Meals

53. Meals and snacks will be the responsibility of the individual rowers.
54. A snack will be provided mid-morning and mid-afternoon Saturday and mid-morning Sunday to officials and volunteers. Please alert the organizer to any food allergies.
55. There will be a free day-one post regatta hospitality event at the Multipurpose Centre prior to the awards presentation on Saturday afternoon, consisting of Island mussels and PEI baked potatoes. It is usually one of the highlights of the regatta!

*Anyone with a shellfish allergy, please be advised. 

56. All competitors and volunteers should bring a reusable water bottle. Bottles can be filled at the Multipurpose Centre and at the Pro Shop, near the marina. Rowing PEI encourages recycling and will make every effort to make the regatta as environmentally sustainable as possible.

AWARDS PRESENTATION 

57. Awards ceremony for the coastal endurance events will be conducted immediately following the last race of the day at the Multipurpose Centre  on Saturday August 17, 2024. 
58. Photography opportunities will be available in the awards area for crews. 
59. Awards will be given out at the end of racing at 12:30 pm on Sunday, August 18, 2024 on the beach. 
60. Competitors and others are asked to stay and help load the Rowing PEI trailer at the end of racing. Many hands make light work!!! 

 

BOAT RENTAL POOL 

Coastal boats will be provided for all events. The cost is built into your registration free for each event.

CAR PARKING

Cars may be parked in one of three parking lots. These parking lots are associated with the Provincial Park and the Rodd Brudenell Resort. 

• There is parking at the Multipurpose Centre. 
• There is parking at the marina, which is next to the clubhouse. 
• Parking on the roads is not permitted to leave room for emergency vehicles whether Fire or EMS. 

BOAT or YACHT DOCKING 

The public boat launch for safety boats and umpire launches assisting in the running of the regatta will be provided by the organizing committee on request: [email protected]

Safety Boats and Umpire Launches will be able to tie up to the outside of the Brudenell Marina co-located with the resort. 

WASHROOMS and SHOWERS 

There are washrooms and showers in the Multipurpose Centre. 

There are also washrooms at the resort and at the pro shop. (including a water dispenser for refilling bottles) 

EMERGENCY FACILITIES

First Aid is provided at the launch area by the PEI GSAR (Ground Search and Rescue).

There are restaurants at the Rodd Brudenell Resort and at the golf club. Rowing PEI will also post an up to date list on nearby restaurants and grocery stores close to the race site.
