Race Rules

  1. All boats are required to launch on time as prescribed by racing officials. Failure to launch at the specified launch time may result in EXCLUSION from the race..
  2. All boats are required to arrive at the starting line before the specified start time for the races. (See Page 1) Failure to arrive with the rest of the crews within a reasonable time (determined by the starting referee) will result in EXCLUSION.
  3. Crews are required to start the race in the order of their bow number.
  4. Crews are required to stay within the channel of the intercoastal water way when racing. The channel is marked by GREEN and RED channel markers. Proper channel traffic pattern is:
    1. Crews heading to the Start or South, should keep the RED markers on the left of the coxswain and hug the deepest water against the west bank or Upper Township side of the bay.
    2. Crews racing down the Course or going North, should keep the RED markers on the coxswain’s left and GREEN markers on their right
  • Failure to adhere to this traffic pattern will result in a WARNING on the first offense, followed by EXCLUSION on the second offense.
  1. If a trailing crew is overtaking another crew, the crew being overtaken is to yield to the OUTSIDE of the oncoming turn when the overtaking crew is within 1 LENGTH of the leading crew. Failure to yield will result in a 30 SECOND PENALTY.
    1. Collisions caused by failure to yield will result in an automatic EXCLUSION for the crew being overtaken.
  2. Crews finishing the race must finish through the main channel arch of the 34th Street Bridge. Failure to do so will result in a 10 SECOND PENALTY.
  3. Finishing or starting crews/team creating an obstruction on the course during racing will be EXCLUDED.
  4. All crews that have finished must clear the bridge and make their way to the Recovery Staging Area (See Pages 6 & 7) AS FAST AS POSSIBLE to allow incoming crews room to finish.
  5. Spectator craft are NOT allowed on the course after 8:00 AM. Spectator craft MUST idle when racing crews are passing and cannot create wake.
  6. Winners will be awarded for the FASTEST time in each category boat class. With the fastest boat for each division (MEN & WOMEN) being awarded fastest time of the day.
  7. Use of foul language and unsportsmanlike conduct will result in a REPRIMAND by referee or race coordinator. The type and kind of REPRIMAND will be subject to the referee/race coordinator’s discretion.
  8. Referees solely retain the ability to EXCLUDE and assess PENALTIES to crews who fail to follow these rules. These decisions are done through their discretion.
    1. Appeals made by COACHES are to be heard and voted on by the referees jury following the conclusion of racing and before official results are given. Simple majority vote by the referees will either uphold or overturn the PENALTY or EXCLUSION assessed to the coach’s crew..
  9. Teams that fail to abide by these rules face team wide DISQUALIFICATION and subsequent EXCLUSION from next year’s event. 
  10. By entering into the race, your team AGREES to these rules and will be subject to its consequences.
