REGATTA UPDATE #01 (October 3 12:00 PM)

Welcome all Competitors, Coaches, and Fans. We are excited to have you join us for the 44th Head of the Mississippi!  A few items:

  • We will have Free skin Screening by Market Street Dermatology available on site as part of our raising awareness to the dangers of sun damage and melanoma.
  • Coaches meeting is at 7:15 AM.
  • Our Goal as always is to have a great, fair and SAFE regatta, which means we will be watching the weather and many other variables.

The good news is we will have calm current on the river with warm weather predicted (high 80s) for Saturday with very slight chance of rain.

The bad news is the high wind predicted for Saturday, about 15 to 25 MPH coming from the South. We are hoping the prediction changes some - as they always do; however, be aware that wind from the South often can kick up our river.

We will plan to start the day as posted and keep an eye on the river, and listen what officials and competitors are telling us throughout the day.

This means we may need to cancel some events, shorten the race course, or change the schedule a bit as the day goes on to accommodate the wind for small boats vs big boats. All maybe!

So, the word is to be prepared - AND if this is too much "maybe" then it is fully your decision as to what you want to do.

Thank you.

REGATTA NEWS

Minneapolis Rowing Club is pleased to welcome clubs and participants to the 44th Head of the Mississippi Regatta.

Meters For Melanoma

We are very excited to announce a continued partnership with METERS FOR MELANOMA.  Melanoma is one of the deadliest cancers there is.  Someone dies every hour from the disease.  Sun-baked on-water rowers are especially at risk for the cutaneous forms of melanoma. There will be free screening available for rowers at the Regatta provided by METERS FOR MELANOMA.

METERS FOR MELANOMA was created to support the Midwest Melanoma Partnership’s work to support research to find a cure. Clubs and individuals are also encouraged to support METERS FOR MELANOMA with tax-free donations.

Other Major Events Nearby

There is a scheduled football game at the Huntington Bank Stadium, University of Minnesota vs. University of Southern California, on Saturday, October 5, the day of the regatta.  Please plan accordingly as traffic and parking may be tight.

The Twin Cities Marathon is on the following day, Sunday, October 6.  The University of Minnesota Homecoming is scheduled in late October.

Drones

State laws and local ordinances does not allow operation of drones over the Mississippi River, the surrounding river banks and on U of M properties.  Any drones observed during the regatta, drone operators will be asked to ceased operation.  If drone operators cannot be found and the drone is interfering the regatta, the LOC will report illegal drone operation to the appropriate authorities.
