Welcome from the Regatta Director

Welcome, rowers, coaches, families, friends, and spectators:

Amoskeag Rowing Club welcomes you to the 2023 New Hampshire Championships George Dirth Memorial Regatta.  We are excited to hold our annual head race again on the beautiful Merrimack River.

Our regatta is named in memory of George Powers Dirth, a former rower at the Derryfield School and Amoskeag Rowing Club who fell in love with rowing his first practice of his freshman fall. The New Hampshire Championships was one of his first races. It held a cherished place in his rowing career, and he kept his NHC medals for the rest of his life. After Derryfield, George rowed in the varsity boat at Oregon State University for three years, as stroke for two years and leading the team to a top 10 Division 1 finish as captain his senior year. His commitment to rowing ran deep-designing the original Amoskeag website, coaching at ARC, and later coaching juniors crew in Colorado. On New Year’s Eve 2013, George perished in an avalanche while backcountry snowboarding, pursuing another passion. In his memory, and on this 10 year anniversary, George’s friends have again chosen to be the major sponsor for our 2023 regatta.

We would like to thank the Town of Pembroke,  the Pembroke Board of Selectmen, Recreation Commission, Town Administration, Emergency Management, Fire, Police, Public Works, and Pembroke Schools; the State of New Hampshire and the New Hampshire Department of Safety; the other organizations that help make the regatta happen, including Capital Area Amateur Radio Emergency Service and Tri-Town Ambulance; and the parent volunteers and supporters from our affiliated school rowing programs, Amoskeag Youth Rowing Club, Bedford Crew Club, The Derryfield School, and Concord Crew. ARC rowing programs would not be possible without the support of the Town of Hooksett,  the Hooksett Town Council, the Hooksett Town Administrator, and Hooksett residents.

Thank you Eric Girard, Head Referee, and the other United States Rowing Association referees. We are pleased you are working with us again this year to oversee and help us run another great, and safe, regatta.

Please also help us thank our business sponsors: Concord Orthopedics, Moin Orthodontics, Orr & Reno, Thomas Craig, Professional Association, Concept 2, Upton & Hatfield, LLP, and Vin Broderick.  We appreciate their financial support for the regatta.

A special thank you to the many donors to the George Dirth Memorial Fund for your major sponsorship and support.  Please join us for the presentation of the George Dirth Memorial Cups after the Men’s and Women’s Junior 4+  races.

The New Hampshire Department of Safety, with the assistance of the Pembroke Fire and Police Departments, provides emergency and first aid response and facilities at the Regatta.  Anyone experiencing a health issue, should call the Regatta Emergency Command Center at 603-545-8361 or 911.

The Amoskeag Rowing Club is a charitable organization that provides rowing programs and opportunities for the public and a home for several area school programs at our boathouse in Hooksett, New Hampshire. Visit us at https://amoskeagrowing.org, or, better yet, take our Learn to Row class, join the club, and row with us.
