PRESS RELEASE

Rowers of All Ages to Attend Inaugural Ventnor City Coastal Regatta

March 27, 2017 - Ventnor, NJ

This summer Ventnor will play host to an exciting rowing regatta, attracting competitors from various rowing clubs across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The Ventnor City Coastal Regatta will be held on July 29, 2017 in the back bay of Ventnor Heights, NJ. Rowers are coming together to help raise money for the Viking Rowing Club, a non-profit organization founded over 50 years ago. The club will be using the event proceeds to benefit their current Youth and Masters programs, Adult Learn-To-Row program, and fund a new program for retired and disabled veterans.

The Ventnor City Coastal Regatta consists of a 1500 meter sprint race with events open to rowers of all ages and abilities. A special challenge for lifeguard singles and doubles will kick off the day, followed by both male and female singles sculling, doubles, quads, and fast eights from various high schools crews and alumni. There will be a special 4000m long course event for ocean sculling. The Ventnor City Coastal Regatta is a US Rowing sanctioned regatta and hopes to attract local, regional and national rowers, spectators, vendors and sponsors from near and far. Rowers can register on RegattaCentral.com and the event will be free to all spectators.

“This event is going to enrich the sport of rowing on a national level. The south jersey area has produced many rowing success stories and a coastal regatta is one way for everyone, rowers and non rowers alike to celebrate south jersey rowing heritage. It all started with the incredible work of John Holland and continues today. Many of us learned to row as children at Viking’s summer rowing camp. The Viking Rowing Club now has programs for everyone aged 8 - 80 and everyone is welcome,” said John Kelley, a former rower for Atlantic High, University of Pennsylvania and Captain of the Viking Masters Program.

“Ventnor is the perfect place for rowing with lots of flat open water. Many adults in the area would like to learn how to row and be able to compete on a local, regional and national level” said Bernadette Ritzel, a former rower for Holy Spirit, Rutgers University and Novice Rowing Coach. “Our goal at Viking is to help the local community and give as many people as possible the opportunity to learn how to row. Rowing is a beautiful lifelong sport. It is easy on the joints and a great way to get outdoors and have fun living a healthy lifestyle.”
