Washington State University wins women's open, JV eights at Seattle's Head of the Lake Regatta

SEATTLE, Nov. 11, 2007 – Washington State University won the women's open and junior varsity eight-oared events, while University of Victoria and University of British Columbia won the men's open and JV eights at the 27th annual Head of the Lake Regatta, Sunday on a wind-shortened Lake Washington Ship Canal rowing course.

Following a 45-minute delay while the regatta officials shortened the planned 3-mile course to an estimated 2,100 meters to avoid rough-water conditions, the Cougar women rowed to a 7:02.72 win, defeating the University of Victoria by 1 minute, 30 seconds.  Gonzaga was third in 7:16.40.

In the women's junior varsity eight-oared event, WSU defeated Gonzaga for the title by 6.64 seconds clocking a 7:09.04 for the win.  Oregon State University was third in 7:37.21.

In the men's open eight, University of Victoria edged the University of British Columbia by 1 minute, 48 seconds, clocking 6:17.32 for the win.  Oregon State University was third in 6:21.98.

In the men's JV eight, University of British Columbia rowed to a 6:32.38 win, defeating Gonzaga by 4.80 seconds. The University of Victoria was third in 6:38.09.

Gonzaga won both the women's and men's third-varsity events.  Shimane University of Japan finished fourth in the men's third-varsity event.

The University of Washington, which had 18 crews entered in Sunday's regatta including the defending IRA national champion men's varsity and junior varsity eights, did not compete following the delayed start.

In the high school events, Los Gatos Rowing Club of California swept the women's junior and JV junior eights, while Everett Rowing Association swept the men's junior and JV junior eights.

In other Head of the Lake Regatta action on Sunday, Seattle's Pocock Rowing Center won seven of 28 masters and club events.  Matt Crouthamel of the Lake Washington Rowing Club captured the men's open single sculls title for one of four club/masters wins for the Seattle club.  Laryssa Breuer of the Lake Stevens Rowing Club won the women's open single sculls.

With 2,173 competitors, the Head of the Lake Regatta is recognized as the largest fall rowing regatta west of the Mississippi River.  Seventy-nine colleges, high schools and clubs from Japan, Canada and seven U.S. states competed in over 400 rowing shells on Sunday.

About Head Races

Head-style rowing regattas are traditionally three-mile regattas on winding courses where crews start at 15-second intervals and compete for time, compared to the 2,000-meter Olympic sprint distance that is rowed in the spring by elite, collegiate and high school crews.  Like a NASCAR race, head racing becomes highly competitive when faster crews starting further back in their events compete for position and attempt to pass slower crews on the narrow course.

About the Head of the Lake Regatta
Founded in 1981 by Paul Enquist, an Olympic gold medal rower from Seattle, the Head of the Lake Regatta (www.headofthelake.org)  hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club has grown to become the largest fall rowing regatta west of the Mississippi. Seattle's fall rowing festival annually attracts over 2,000 rowers from the leading college, high school, masters and elite-level rowing programs in the United States and Canada.
