Schedule, Progressions, and Racing
[Q] When do progressions freeze?
[A] With the close of Standard Registration.
[Q] [Our Team] is in an event with seven (7) entries. The information packet indicated that this event would go straight to a Sunday Grand Final, but we see the event listed in the posted Time Trial schedule for Friday p.m | Saturday a.m. Please advise.
[A] The original information packet did indeed list smaller events with up to seven (7) entries as a Sunday Grand-Final only. However, based on the numbers received through the close of Standard Registration, and the ability to accommodate/schedule those time trials in the Friday afternoon | Saturday morning windows, the organizing committee has ADDED the Time Trials to the schedule for EVERY event. This provides an opportunity for these athletes in smaller events to (optionally) race in the scheduled time trial window/format if they so choose. In all cases, the organizing committee will use the results of the Time Trial to seed the lane assignments for the appropriate progression. For these smaller events, those that choose to not participate in the Time Trial will be randomly assigned to remaining race lanes for their respective Grand Final. Any team missing the Time Trial for an event with eight (8) or more entries will be disqualified from progressing in that event.
[Q] If the number of entries in an event drops after the close of standard registration and that revised number of entries could change the progression, what happens?
[A] In general, the progressions will not change. For example, consider the case where an event has 19 entries at the close of standard registration, and the stated progression includes a pair of Saturday pm semifinals. Despite a scratch in that event, which could theoretically change the progression, the organizing committee would retain the original structure. Using the same example above, in the event of a weather-related delay, the progression would likely be changed to eliminate the semi-finals, changing the progression to the Saturday Petit Final | Sunday Grand Final.
[Q] [Our Team] is in an event with eleven (11) entries. The information packet indicated that this event would use a Time Trial to identify the Top 6 for the Grand Final, but that no Petit Final would run. Can consideration for this situation be made that would add the Petit Final?
[A] The LOC has considered and accepted this request, adjusting and adding a Petit Final for Events with 11 or 12 entries. Those events now include a Time Trial to define progression to a Saturday pm Petit Final for boats 7-11 or 7-12 and progression to the original Sunday Grand Final for boats 1-6.
[Q] [Our Team] would like to participate in Events where the schedule shows Time Trials that start about an hour apart. Is it feasible for the athletes to successfully compete in both?
[A] Yes. This situation exists with the anticipated schedule for 3V8 -> 3V4 and the Youth 4- -> Youth 2V8. Coaches in this circumstance need to please do two things: 1) At registration on Friday, notify the LOC that you have this situation. You will be provided a HOT SEAT card that the coxswain needs to cary with them in the first boat. 2) Ensure that equipment for the second time trial is prepared such that athletes recovering from the first time trial can expedite the recovery and re-launch. USRowing referees at Control Commission will provide specific instructions that support an expedited turn.
Eligibility
[Q] [Our Team] is comprised of younger, development, and novice rowers. We would like to participate in the 3V8+ with athletes that are Novices, but in some cases are no longer U17. We have no other Youth entries. Can we submit an entry for the 3V8+ without meeting the requirement for 1V/2V?
[A] The LOC will consider requests similar to this on a case by case basis. In general, where a team/club/organization is not competing in other Youth events, the LOC would allow this.
[Q] [Our Team] would like to enter a Youth 4- and a Youth 2V4+. We would not enter a Youth 4+. Is this allowed?
[A] This is allowed subject to the stipulation that the same athletes cannot participate in both events, i.e. the athletes in the 4- must be distinct from the athletes particiating in the 2V+ throughout any progression scenario.
[Q] My child was born on <date>. Are they eligible to compete in the Dogwood Junior Championship?
[A] The Dogwood Junior Championship Regatta follows the USRowing Rules for Youth eligibility. A Youth is a rower “who in the current calendar year does not attain the age of 19, or who is and has been continuously enrolled in a secondary school as a full-time student seeking a diploma. A competitor thus ceases to be a Junior after December 31 of the year of his or her 18th birthday, or of the year in which he or she completes the 12th grade of secondary school, having been a full-time student, whichever is later.”
