The main goal of AYC is to get kids racing and give them as much good experience as possible. We strive to provide a competitive environment that is also relaxed enough to help the kids learn, be taught and have fun.
We do not use USRowing Referees but follow USRowing rules of racing.
No boat weigh in.
We allow lineup changes until the last minute and do not mind if coaches want or need to change lineups from Saturday to Sunday. We ask that all athletes competing have signed the waiver and that coaches are not breaking rules with switches but we do not need to know every lineup switch you make if you are doing it for good reason and staying within the rules.
We expect coaches will be following the overall rules and (for example) won't be trying to put seniors in high school into middle school boats. If you need to fill a boat to get kids racing, please reach out and we can often accomodate in some way.
U17 events should be full of rowers and coxswain who are all U17 in this calendar year.
U16/Freshmen boats should be full of rowers and coxswain who are at least U16 OR Freshmen or below in high school. No sophomores or above are allowed unless they happen to be U16. But a freshmen in high school who is technically a U17 rower IS allowed to compete here.
U15/Middle School boats should be full of rowers and coxswain who are at least U15 OR in 8th grade or below. No freshmen in high school or above are allowed unless they happen to be U15. But a middle schooler who is technically a U16 rower IS allowed to compete here. We attempt to be extra patient with younger boats but if any team would like to provide a coach to assist at the start docks or on a launch during these races, please let us know as extra help can be appreciated!
Open events can be a mix of whomever you choose. It can be your varsity boat again or a chance to race kids in an 8 that didn't make another event.
2nd and 3rd boats should be the best attempt at making 2nd and 3rd and so on as possible.
Please teach your crews how to back into stake boats AND how to factor in wind pushing them one way or another in the lane. Please also go over how to scull a boat once they get locked onto a stake boat.
We will provide alpha numeric bow numbers at the docks.
We try and get all events racing as much as possible on Saturday and Sunday. The goal being:
10 or less entries will attempt to have a race for lanes on Saturday and a final on Sunday.
11-20 entries will have 2 heats with the top 5 going to the A final and others to B final.
20+ entries will have heats (we have 10 lanes to work with) and progress to A and B finals.
