Definitions and Eligibility Rules

Note – unless otherwise stated, all dates shown are in the year of the regatta.

On-the-Water Self Timing: On-the-water events must cover 4500 meters and may be rowed on any body of water suitable for rowing. (Note that the Strava course on the upper Potomac River is not 4500 meters.) We recommend that you take a picture or otherwise capture your results for validation. The Regatta Committee reserves the right to request photographic evidence from the top three finishers of each event.

Youth: Any sculler 18 years of age or younger as of September 19.

Master: Any sculler at least 30 years of age as of September 19.

Senior Master: Any sculler at least 40 years of age as of September 19.

Grand Master: Any sculler at least 50 years of age as of September 19.

Veteran: Any sculler at least 60 years of age as of September 19.

Senior Veteran: Any sculler at least 70 years of age as of September 19.

Para Events: Para-rowing event classifications/eligibility for adaptive athletes will follow guidelines used during the 2020 USRowing Indoor Rowing Championship/CRASH-B. Specifics may be found on pages 10 – 12 of the USIRC Entry Packet. Entry into the FISA/US Classification events and self-classification are on your honor.

Handicaps: Handicaps will be based on the USRA 1000m handicaps adjusted for the 2.8 mile / 4500 meter head race distance. A listing of on-the-water time handicaps used for different boat classes is available online. A listing of ergometer time handicaps used for different boat classes is available online.

Lightweight: Men: 165 pounds or less; Women: 133 pounds or less. Weigh yourself on the honor system on the same day as your piece.

Parent-Child Erg: This erg race is for fun: no age requirements or handicaps, no gender requirements, no DNA, no arguments. 

Mixed Double Erg: The crew shall be one male and one female sculler. Entries must be submitted under only one club/school name. 

Mixed Quad Erg: The crew shall be two male and two female scullers. Entries must be submitted under only one club/school name. Three of the four scullers must be from the same club/school.

Mixed Octuple Erg: The crew shall be at least half female (i.e., no fewer than five women), including the coxswain. Entries must be submitted under only one club/school name. Five of the eight scullers must be from the same club/school. The coxswain must be a regular on-the-water coxswain and must submit an erg time for 4500 meters.

Masters Mixed Erg (2X, 4X, 8X): Masters crews (minimum average age 35, no rowers under age 30) will receive a handicap but will not race in a separate division. Masters handicaps are based on the USRA standard. See Handicaps, above.

Results Entry

Results are self-reported. You may make as many attempts as you’d like in the nine-day window (September 19-27). Competitor submission of results are on your honor. We recommend that you take a picture or otherwise capture your results for validation. The Regatta Committee reserves the right to request photographic evidence from the top three finishers of each event. Results submitted out of the window will not be accepted. Winners will be announced October 1.

Sportsmanship

The Regatta Committee reserves the right to rule on any situation not specifically covered by these guidelines and to penalize or disqualify any competitor or crew that appears to violate the spirit or letter of the rules of competition or sportsmanship, on the water or off.
