For a look at the Open Ocean Regatta, watch this video narrated by Gordie Nash, the originator of this sculling race on the San Francisco Bay.  Now presented by the Open Water Rowing Center in Sausalito, there are three courses.  The longest is 7.6 nautical miles (about 14,000 meters) and goes outside the Golden Gate Bridge.  The middle course stays inside the bay and  its 5.3 nautical mile (10,000 meters) course includes a 4,000 straight line.  The shortest course is 1.77 nautical miles, or about 3000 meters.
