The San Mateo Lagoon located in San Mateo is originally a stretch of unimproved wetlands similar to Smith and Steinberger sloughs, the San Mateo Lagoon is now an 'engineered waterway' approximately 6 km long, completely civilized by homes, businesses, docks, and retaining walls, and regulated by a dam at its northern terminus. It is one of the longest fully protected pieces of shallow water on San Francisco Bay, with an unusual combination of low winds, flat water, and easy access by road. It is also one of the crookedness passages around, changing course 90 degrees or more 10 times from beginning to end. These happy qualities made the lagoon an obvious choice for what has become one of the biggest rowing challenges west of the Mississippi--the BIAC Fall Regatta.
