St. Mary's Preparatory has been rowing on Orchard Lake for 40-years. The spring regatta began as a sprint challenge between St. Mary's and 1 or 2 additional crews. Typically St. Mary's would challenge St. John's of Toledo; two midwest men crews.
In 2010, the regatta was changed to a sprint cup with medals and trophies. Ladies were added the same year and the competition grew to 10-crews. In 2011 the scoring system was changed to it's current format; shown below. By 2012, the SMCC had attracted 16-crews from Ohio and Michigan. Teams from Cleveland to Grand Rapids participated. A 60% growth in 2-years.
Following the 2012 SMCC, the school and booster club decided the event needed to change to an invitational. Additional teams could not be accomodated on the grounds and course without upgrades. St. Mary's Preparatory and the SMP Crew Booster club continue to explore ways to improve the event and accomodate more crews. For the 2013 season, the SMCC is capped at 14-crews.
The competition should provide challenge. Teams from Indiana, Michigan, New York, and Ohio will participate. The event is typically the weekend prior to the Midwest Championship, and the St. Mary's Crew Boosters are glad they could accomodate for 2013. Below are the results for the SMCC since 2010.
