Lake Wendouree is at the heart of Ballarat and hosted the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games rowing, kayaking and canoeing events. This event cemented Ballarat’s reputation for hosting rowing events. Since 1864, when a rowing course was first cut through Lake Wendouree it has been carefully nurtured by Ballarat City Council and the local community.
Key features of the venue are: • Rowing Course: 8 lanes • Circumference: 6 kilometres • Capacity: 3,860 megalitres • Maximum depth: 2.2 – 2.3 metres • Surface area: 238 hectares • Foreshore area: 16 hectares • Height above sea level: 450 metres |

The City of Ballarat has invested in the development and improvement of Lake Wendouree to ensure the preparedness of the venue for another world class event. This includes:
• Weed cutting program • Dredging of the rowing course • Widening of the rowing course to eight (8) lanes • Completion of foreshore works at both the start and finish ends of the rowing course • Installation of revised starting pontoons on the rowing course • Renewal of pontoons at the finish of the rowing course • Renewal and upgrade of the judges box at the end of the rowing course • Installation of the buoying system for the rowing course |
