Competitors’ Required Skills & Race Protocol
- Anyone entering the race must have a level of expertise in handling their craft that allows them to complete the race in a timely, safe, and controlled manner;
- You must confirm your presence with the start and the finish line Committee boats. Should you withdraw from the race, for any reason, the safety protocol requires you to call and inform the designated race official;
- Some power boats will be located along the racecourse at designated check-points, however you should be able to operate fully independently during the race. Additionally, a safety launch will be available in case of an emergency;
- There will be volunteers at the finish line to assist in getting boats off the water in a timely and safe order;
- The safety of all competitors depends upon everyone's commitment to safety as the first priority and to good sportsmanship.
Competitors’ Safety Plan & Gear
Taking into consideration the unpredictability of the Hudson River, you should have a safety plan, along with the appropriategear to implement it. In past races,competitors have found the following gear to be helpful, if not essential:
- PFDs for each athlete (which may be stored under each seat);
- One cell phone per boat (carried in a waterproof case);
- Bailing device(s);
- One whistle per boat (on a lanyard).
Due to the potentially difficult conditions, as well as the length of the race, only those with experience navigating challenging conditions are invited to compete. The River Rowing Association Race Committee reserves the right to:
- Refuse to register any individual or boat;
- Expel/disqualify any individual or boat for failure to meet the requirements for completing the race in accordance with the race requirements or protocol.
