Cleveland’s Rowing Community Commitment
:

Annually, more than 1,000 people from Greater Cleveland row on the Cuyahoga River. Bringing excitement, energy and pride to Cleveland, these people are revitalizing our city center and the Flats Peninsula. Rowing facilities are located in the Westbank of the Flats at Carter Road on the Scranton Peninsula. The Cleveland Rowing Foundation, established in 1995, oversees eight rowing programs and stewards their growth. Activities are available for all ages and include Adult Rowing, Collegiate Programs, High School Rowing, and Community Rowing Programs.

Rowing Programs

High School Rowing Opportunity

More than 190 high school students are rowing this year, up 20% from last year. This sizable increase is because rowing instills teamwork, strength and the opportunity to attend College on scholarship. The number of Cleveland area high school students attending college on full or partial scholarship has jumped in the past year – and we project greater increases as our programs grow. For many, rowing presents the lifetime opportunity to go to College.

High School Rowing programs:  St. Ignatius Boys Team, Shaker High School Girls Team, Cleveland Scholastic Rowing Association Girls team (represents 16 public and private schools), Burning River Crew Boys Team (represents 8 area schools).Rowing is one of few recognized Title IX sports, making rowing an extraordinary scholarship opportunity for young women. For example, during the past few year 5 Shaker High young women were awarded college scholarships for rowing.

Collegiate Rowing Teamwork

134 are college students are rowing this year, often waking before 5 am for a morning workout on the Cuyahoga River. College rowers are dedicated to teamwork, discipline and strength. Their commitment to community building and the City of Cleveland is unrivaled; collegiate rowers are leaders who help train younger rowers and support community events such as River Sweep, Row for the Cure and an area regatta. College Rowing Programs: Cleveland State University, John Carroll University, Baldwin Wallace, Case Western Reserve University and Oberlin College.

Adult Rowing

Energy From spring through fall, 700 adults converge on the western bank of the Flats in Downtown Cleveland to row and afterward, socialize. Adult rowing leagues are helping to revitalize Cleveland and infuse our community with enthusiasm, spirit, and capital. Adult Rowing Leagues: Competitive, Recreational, Summer and Fall Leagues.

 Community Rowing Strength

Over 200 urban youth participated in free learn-to-row activities during the past few years. These young people – from Cleveland’s Recreation Center and aRosie's Girls – learn about teamwork, endurance and opportunities to row at their area high school. For some, it’s about the sport. For others, it’s an opportunity to attend College on scholarship. Adaptive rowing programs are also available at no cost for individuals who are visually impaired or have physical disabilities.

Community Rowing Programs:
