While we hope Hurricane Ian doesn’t land directly on us, there is that possibility. Right now, the storm seems to move into southern Virginia Sunday morning, which should leave our conditions cloudy with occasional rain, but manageable. We will plan day to day. Communication will be posted on Regatta Central and emails will be sent to registrants.
FINAL CANCELLATION DECISION (if not sooner) WILL BE MADE BY 5AM SUNDAY MORNING.
Important points:
- The venue address is Thompson Boat Center - 2900 Virginia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20037. However, this lot is mostly for trailers and the early arrival car-toppers.
- Parking - plan to park in one of the garages on Water Street or along the meters. Do not plan to park in the TBC lot - this is for trailers and car-toppers.
- Pick up your bow numbers upstairs at TBC. Lightweight weigh in's are on your honor. No weigh in.
- Plan to launch 30 minutes before your event - be sure you have your oars, shoes are tied, nuts and bolts are tight, etc.
- There will be a virtual coaches and coxswains meeting on Thursday at 7:30pm - here is the link. There will also be a short recap on Sunday morning at 6:45am at TBC on the concrete apron overlooking the ramps to the river. Here is the slideshow for this evenings meeting.
- Tent space - this is very limited. We do not have permits to use the space directly on the waterfront or in the water front park upstream from the restaurant area. All tents and team gathering spots need to be on the TBC grassy area downstream of the Swedish Embassy.
- Order of events to be canceled in case of fast moving water: Novice 8’s, novice / junior 1x’s, junior 2x’s, all other 1x’s, all other 2x’s. If we get to the point the water is moving too fast, we may need to cancel all races.
Obstacles and other happenings on the river/TBC/PBC:
- Veterans paddling race on the DC shore line between Hens and Chicks and the Washington Canoe Club Dock.
- Pleasure boats/kayaks and other small recreational craft - while Harbor Police will be helping to keep the course clear and the weather should help keep down the volume, please be careful out there!
- Please only use the ramp in the middle of the dock for 8’s - the 1x and 2x’s can use the most upstream ramp. Launch upstream and land on the downstream side of the docks.
Course buoys verses safety / navigational guidance buoys / other racing guidelines:
- There will be 3 penalty buoys - all large orange buoys with a flag.
- All other buoys (regardless of color or size) are for navigational purposes only - to keep blind boats and coxswains from entering or getting too close to rocks.
- Boats may be sent down the course NOT in numerical order - if a boat is out of order, rest assured the timers will communicate and get the correct time.
- The faster crew gets the shorter line, but must take it - the faster crew does NOT have the right to cause a collision. Sometimes it is faster to go around a crew that is less experienced or you are approaching quickly - the interfering crew will be penalized, however we cannot take time off your race. Crashing takes lots of time (and money).
PLEASE NOTE CHANGES FOR 2022 SCULLERS HEAD OF THE POTOMAC (SHOP):
1. The race schedule has changed dramatically - the entire regatta is between 8am and 12:30pm. Pay attention to start times to avoid conflicts with double racing hulls and/or athletes.
2. There are Junior Novice 8 events as well as paddling and Para/Inclusion events.
3. The course has shifted downstream. Please see the map below for the new start (at Hens and Chickens) and finish line (just at Roosevelt Bridge).
4. There is no longer car top parking or access to Potomac Boat Club from Water Street - DC has removed all the parking spaces under the Whitehurst Freeway. We can no longer accomodate car toppers from this location.
5. Everyone must sign the waiver!
6. Please email [email protected] to register your trailer - include all clubs on the trailer. We can only accomodate 11 trailers!
