South Side Smackdown is an indoor regatta hosted by the Chicago Training Center. Typically hosted at our (former) indoor practice location at Gage Park, this year's SSSD will be hosted at our new indoor practice location at Davis (Dr. Nathan) Square Park on Chicago's south side. SSSD features your typical individual 2k event as well as a flurry of other events, both on sliders and relays. Stay tuned for event listings!

The Tiro Cup, originally its own event, now refers to all junior novice and middle school events which take place at SSSD. Teams compete for the Tiro Cup and the middle school Tiro Cup!

Entry fee includes registration for an individual event and up to 3 team events.  All participants must compete in an individual event

Fees: before January 31: juniors/middle schoolers: $20/per athlete fee; collegiate/open/masters: $25/per athlete fee! ($10 late fee per athlete if registering after 1/31)

Overall team cap of $800 if all registered under the same account!

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS

  • 2000m: Juniors/Collegiate/Open - Test your rowing fitness on the classic erg test distance - 2000 meters.
  • 1000m: Masters - Masters athletes over 36 years have the option to compete in the 1000 meter race as is standard for their category.
  • 500m: Middle School - Our newest athletes have the opportunity to compete in a 500m race. They may opt to join the junior novice 2k event if they prefer.
  • New events added by request as of 2/1/24! 500m open recreational and 500m masters in mens and womens categories

TEAM EVENTS (Team events are offered in open, junior, and junior novice categories. Collegiate athletes should compete in the open category. There is one special event for middle schoolers, the five person, 10 minute relay for maximum meters. If there is an event you'd like to see, reach out to Rachel Clendenning at [email protected]. We may be able to accomodate requests based on interest)

There is time in the schedule for athletes to race in all three team events, if they dare...

  • Stationary 2x 1K: Teams of two rowers (2x) on 2 stationary ergs racing 1000 meters each
  • Relay 8x 2K: Teams of eight rowers (8x) on 1 stationary erg racing 2000 meters total. Fast on, fast off is the key to crossing the finish line first.
    • Middle School 10 minute relay for max meters: 5 rowers to a team (on regatta central, this event is coded as a 4+ to allow each relay team to register 5 athletes. One can be registered as a coxswain but all must row during the 10 minutes)
  • Slider 4x 1k: Teams of four rowers (4x) on 4 ergs connected by sliders racing 1000 meters each. The ultimate on-land test for your team to find the rhythm and swing together. Does your team have what it takes? Prove it!
